750 KCSE Top Performers Join Equity Leaders Program for Internships & Career Growth

Equity Bank has once again demonstrated its commitment to nurturing young talent by selecting 750 top-performing 2023 KCSE candidates for its prestigious Equity Leaders Program (ELP). This initiative provides high-achieving students with internship opportunities, mentorship, and leadership training to prepare them for future success.

Who Are the Selected Scholars?

The 26th cohort of the Equity Leaders Program includes:

  • 505 scholars from 225 secondary schools across all 47 counties.
  • 104 beneficiaries from the Wings to Fly program.
  • 186 Elimu Scholars who scored A and A-minus.
  • 215 top-performing national and sub-county students who scored A.

This diverse selection ensures that students from all backgrounds, including those from marginalized areas, have access to life-changing opportunities.

The Internship Experience

After induction, the scholars will begin a six-month paid internship at Equity Bank branches across Kenya. This internship offers:

  • Hands-on experience in banking, finance, and customer service.
  • Professional mentorship from Equity Bank staff.
  • A monthly stipend, totaling Ksh. 121.2 million by the end of the program.

A portion of the stipend is saved to help scholars transition smoothly into university, ensuring financial support when they enroll.

Impact of the Equity Leaders Program

Since its inception in 1998, the Equity Leaders Program has supported:

  • 23,825 scholars in local and international universities.
  • 8,878 students in paid internships across Kenya, Uganda, DRC, and Rwanda.
  • 891 scholars who have secured fully funded scholarships to top global universities, including Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.

Notably, ELP alumni in the medical field have established Equity Afia medical centers, expanding affordable healthcare across Kenya. The program also supports graduates in business and innovation, helping them establish enterprises.

Dr. James Mwangi, Equity Group CEO and Executive Chairman of the Equity Group Foundation (EGF), encouraged the scholars to leverage their academic success to become catalysts for change. He emphasized the power of networking within ELP, which includes some of Africa’s brightest young leaders across multiple industries.

Through mentorship, leadership development, and financial support, the Equity Leaders Program continues to shape the next generation of African leaders, equipping them with the skills and confidence to drive change in their communities.
